Junior Football ‘B’ Championship St Marys Rochfortbridge advanced to the semi-final of the Junior B championship with a comfortable 16 point win over Kilbeggan last Sunday afternoon 20th November. The bridge started well and scored a goal with only their second attack of the game. A swift move started in the half back line eventually found Kieran Geraghty who scored a cracking goal off the angle of the goals from an acute angle. This early goal settled the bridge and the soon besieged the Kilbeggan goals. Points from Niall Cully, Eddie Alford, Ian Cunningham and Dwayne Leavy saw the bridge extend their lead before Kilbeggan finally registered a score on the stroke of half time. Junior Cup Final St Marys trekked to Springfield to take on Mullingar Shamrocks in the final of the Junior Cup. Following a lacklustre performance from St Marys Shamrocks ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-08. Nov 13th | Junior Cup Final Sun 13th Nov St Marys played Mullingar Shamrocks in the Junior Cup final on Sunday 13th November hoping for a third successive win in the competition. The Bridge started well with a youthful team and were level with the home side on 2 points a- piece after 10 minutes. While Mullingar had plenty of possession, they were unable to find a way through a stubborn defence and St Mary’s soon took the lead when Kieran Geraghty spun his marker and pointed well. With just a minute left in the first half both teams were level on 5 points each before Shamrocks scored two goals in two attacks to establish a six point lead at the break. The second half was played at a slower tempo with Shamrocks controlling most of the possession but unable to add greatly to their lead due to some good defending by the bridge. However St Mary’s were unable to claw back the deficit and despite applying good pressure, goal chances went a begging with the Shamrocks goalkeeper pushing an Eoin Gorman shot onto the crossbar. In the end the bridge slipped to an eight point defeat on a final score of 2-10 to 0-8.

This was always going to be a tough game as Shandonagh have been one of the more consistent teams at Intermediate level for a number of years. It was nip and tuck for the first half as both teams sized each other up and St Marys held a slim 0-6 to 0-5 lead at the interval. On the restart Shandonagh pressed strongly and slowly were gaining the initiative when, at 0-8 apiece, St Marys were reduced to 14 men and it looked like curtains for St Marys. However as has been witnessed on many occasions the team which has lost a player has kicked on and so it was with St Marys as they took control and a penalty for a foul on Larry Poynton was despatched to the Shandonagh net by Eoin Gorman. Two more points were added to give St Marys a five point lead and a spot in the semi-final against CFCW in two weeks time. While there is some room for improvement, St Marys are coming into form at the right time and with a bit of tweaking will present a challenge for any team. Final score: St Marys 1-10, Shandonagh 0-08. Team; Declan Hogan, Damien Healy, David Mitchell, Adam Nolan, Paul Carey, Michael Geraghty, Dwayne Leavy, Colin Gavin, Alan Gavin, Robbie Kenny, Larry Poynton, Joe Guiden, Ian Cunningham, Eoin Gorman, Ciaran Geraghty, Tommy Conroy, Ray O'Sullivan, Damien Gavin.
